Affordable DIY Personalized Doormat

Fun fact: I have an oddly weird obsession with doormats. They’re the first thing your guests see when they visit your home, so I’m always on the hunt for quirky mats that reflect both my personality and style. Over the last few months, I’ve searched high and low for a cute – affordable – custom mat that would pair perfectly with my front porch. I knew I’d be able to find what I needed on Etsy, but the reoccurring $40-$50 price tags had me second guessing whether I really needed a custom doormat.

Recently I noticed “DIY doormats” trending on Instagram and the timing honestly could not have been more perfect. After a little research, I tracked down all of the items needed and decided to tackle this project myself. I went with a “Halloween” themed mat given we’re in the month of October. In total, it took around 20 minutes to make and I still cannot believe how cost effective and EASY it was. I think I may have found a new hobby, y’all! I cannot wait to create several more to swap out during the upcoming holiday seasons.

Keep reading below to learn how to recreate a DIY doormat yourself in under 20 minutes!

Let’s get started!

Materials:

  • Plain Doormat | HERE
  • Black Outdoor Acrylic Paint | HERE
  • Foam Brushes | HERE
  • Stencils | HERE
  • Painters Tape | HERE
  • (Optional) Flex Seal Spray | HERE

Instructions:

  1. Lay the stencils on the mat to reflect the quote of your choice.  Firmly press the stencils into the mat and secure the corners with painters tape.
  2. Using the foam brush, begin lightly dabbing the paint inside the stencil. It’s important to avoid stroking and/or pressing down too hard with the sponge brush as this could cause the paint to bleed through the stencil. Allow the paint to dry and follow up with an additional layer or two until your desired shade is reached. (Tip: You can speed up the drying process by using a blow dryer. Be sure to keep the nozzle about 2 inches away from the mat.)
  3. Once the paint has fully dried, slowly remove both the painters tape and stencils.
  4. (Optional) If your mat will be used outdoors, I highly recommend sealing it with a coat of Flex Seal to extend its longevity. It’s normal for the mat to fade overtime, however sealing it will help extend its life.

That’s it! Now you have a unique custom mat ready for your front (or back) door! I cannot wait to see all of your doormat creations! If you decide to try this DIY out, be sure to tag me on Instagram or use the hashtag #BrookeADIYs!
