If you’re new here, each holiday (or season), I round up my favorite children’s books that reflect that holiday/season for Nori’s book wall. February is hands down my favorite month for books, not because of Valentines Day, but because of Black History Month. While I make it a point to celebrate Black history in our home every day, I’m looking forward to dedicating this month to commemorate our heritage. For Nori’s shelves, I chose to not only display books that celebrate the contributions Black Americans have made in history, but also books that highlight characters of color and celebrate diversity and inclusion. Now that Nori is a bit older and really into books, I’m looking forward to grabbing a few off her shelf to read each day.
I’ve shared this before, but I don’t follow strict guidelines when it comes to books recommended for “babies” or “specific ages”. While I do make sure to have baby-friendly books available, I also enjoy purchasing ones that may be intended for slightly older children. This allows the book to grow with Nori rather than having a collection full of baby books that she will quickly outgrow. If the book is on the longer side, I’ll read until I’ve lost her interested and pick up where we left off the next night.
For parents interested in building a seasonal/holiday book collection, I highly recommend buying a couple of books each year and renting the rest from your local library. This will allow you to slowly grow your collection without breaking the bank. I’ve been growing Nori’s book collection for almost two years now and only buy a few new books each year.
While February is a great time to share these books, I strongly encourage reading books that recognize and celebrate Black history throughout the entire year, not just a single month. I hope that you join me in celebrating Black History in your home!
Happy reading!
